Very well put on the copy protection laws. Yet another reason I am a proud Canadian.

The canadian supreme court decided about a month ago that it was legal to rip songs from CD to your hard drive and that it was legal to share those songs with your friends (provided you aren't making money off of them) So the RIAA was shut down in Canada. Thus protecting us users at home from getting our identities released for prosecution (a violation of our privacy).

Thank you Shaw, Rogers, Telus and so on for not being willing to release customer identities!

I believe we have the same policy here in the Netherlands. U can copy CD's as much as you want, as long as you keep them inside you friends circle and dont make money out of it.

But hey... pretty much everything is allowed here. From smoking pot to spanking fat hookers, if u want to do it without getting thrown in jail... Come visit The Netherlands.

I couldn't post in the copy protection post that Howard started (for some reason there isn't even a reply option), so I'll throw out a few more artists that are using copy protection as well -

A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step (the only protected one I own, only reason was that I knew I liked the album already and it was $9.98 at A&B Sound)

Melissa Auf Der Maur - Auf Der Maur (I wanted to buy this one, had already listened to it lots and liked it, but goddamn - the first time I actually found it in a store it was $25 for an imported copy protection CD!  And she's from Canada!)

C'mon people, lets keep outing the greedy bastards - especially EMI!  But on the flipside, support Universal Music Canada, I've found that they are very supportive of new artists and put a great deal of CDs out for $9.99 - just last week I bought Keane and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at that price.   I've found quite a few other CDs in the past like this that I may not have bought otherwise but I'm a lot more willing to risk $10 on a CD than $15 or $20.

I'll come out and admit it, I'm one of the old farts from hell  Cool

In the early years I got ripped-off a lot; and when you're a kid there ain't a damn thing you can do about it... who's going to care?  So I've stayed neutral on this subject... but ya know - you're absolutely right.

When you buy a CD you should be able to do whatever you want with it.  There are dozens of great Artists I would never have heard of if someone hadn't given me a copy of the cassette/album/CD.

Now what's the difference between burning a few songs for your neighbor and blasting the stereo for the entire neighborhood?  Actually, that's how I first heard Metallica (aside from them being the band nobody would hire).

But one thing will never change - you can still record off of the radio!  So the people making a big noise about it just have no way to win.  Not too bright huh?  Roll Eyes

I'm with the Wazee folks on this one.  Why stress over the little things.

So now it's come to this eh. We have been forced to deface our 15 - 20 dollar Cd's with black marker pens and sticky tape if we want to include a track from one of our favorite bands on a Various Artist cd of our own.
This Sucks Moose Dick! As this native guy I used to know, would say. But they also have gone as far as to encode the cd to make your computer crash or lock up if you try to rip "their" CD. Gee, they sound to me as bad as the hackers that the FBI is trying to prosecute.

This is another in a long list of greedy and malicious behavior from the record companies. Damn them! I get really worked up about this issue!
These parasites have been feeding on the music industry long enough. They have been responsible for stifling the creativity of artists and are solely responsible for the likes of Britney Spears and Clay Aikin. They have no scruples to speak of. They think they know what people want to hear? give me a break please!
They've even monopolized the right of the musicians and the technicians to be fairly compensated for their talents. It's time the Artists got smart and started selling the music themselves, on the net, eliminating these fat bloated executives and middlemen. How would you like to be told that after selling a multi - platinum CD that when you got back from a world tour promoting the cd that you actually owe the record company money? It has happened. Ask Aaron Lewis from Staind. The list is much larger, Van Halen another victim of the record companies greed. This really has to stop. there are a lot of people making alot of money off the talents of a few. it's just sucks.
I will continue to download I will continue to give burnt CD's to my freinds so they hopefully wont have to go blow 15 - 20 dollars a pop to get one song.

In case you didn't know about it... http://www.xoteck.com/ripcast/

The downside to ripping radio is that sometimes the best songs aren't played on the radio.  Once you discover which artists are talented enough to put more than a few good tracks on a CD, those are the ones you should buy (the new Perfect Circle being one, for example).  The one-hit wonders and the johnny come lately's are best given your music dollars by going to see their show.  When you buy debut CD's and compilation CD's you're just giving your money to the record (distribution) companys like Sony, RCA, BMI, et all.

 But that's just me maybe..

Radio, whats that?
I can't bear to listen to local radio. The commercials, the dumb ass DJ. Or other net Radio that play 200 songs then repeat for a week No thanks!
Thats why I'm here listening to new, good music on Wazee.

I do not subject myself to a barrage of advertising for products that I do not want or need.
They, I am told. Are the ones that censor what is played on traditional radio. Not the DJ or the Music Director.
The Advertisers pick what they think is ok for you to hear. And if they take offense to a song they threaten to pull their ad money.
So the same company that wants to sell you that dishwasher at below cost "because the manager is on vacation and you better get in here right now to take advantage of this once in a life time deal." He is the one that says Britney Spears sells dishwashers not Korn. So...... Oops I did it again, starts to play again.

...my point was that the people who are biggest about copy protection are the ones you're most likely to hear on the radio.  So they're screwed anyway, ya know?

I agree with Ballkick's earlier comment, every band should put out their music themselves, sell it on the internet, the perfect medium for that kind of stuff. It means more money for the bands you like, and good quality cd's without copy protection for yourself. Everyone wins. I like to buy cd's at concerts, online or at small cd-stores. The last one isn't quite the same, but atleast it gives me the feeling I'm buying at a place where they care about the music. Online sells are great too and it works. When a band's got a fanbase those people are buying the music anyway. Buying online only makes it easier for them. Plus they can include little gifts. For example when TwisterX and I ordered System Of A Down's Mezmerize at their webstore we got a tshirt for free. Plus it was alot cheaper than what we would've paid for it in stores. This is the future of selling music. Radiohead is doing the same thing. After their 6th album Hail To The Thief their contract with EMI was completed. Now their free as a bird AND recording a new album. Hopefully they'll not resign with any recordcompany and just sell it through W.A.S.T.E. which handles their online sellings. Fortunately they hate recordcompanies and even said that out loud when they were still with EMI, so I'm not afraid Wink

So yeah, I agree, away with the weird copy protections, what the hell are they thinking. When we purchase a cd, it's our property and we can do with it whatever the monkeypenis we want. Bands soon find this out and there will be a revolution. Mark my words Grin
