Am travelling to Trail this week-end to attend an interview monday morning for work at Cominco. Failing that I've managed to get on the short list for a Fiber Optic service in the Invermere area. So crossin my fingers that a new career is on the horizon. Oh dear lord BK. You don't want a hug do you? Please say no. A hug no, a few more posts maybe might cheer me up. no don, i think he needs a good muay thai match where he can kick the shit outta someone/something
I had to spar with Sandra last night to work on her defense against ballkicks,...she needs more work as I guess I was just too fast. I'm going to the gym in two hours to kick the shit outta something. And punch, and elbow and knee. I might even bite.

Well, here's some random happenings in my world as I don't have anything funny or WTF-ish to post at the moment: I've been getting some pretty good workouts lately by riding my mountain bike in the nearby desert. Oh, and by lifting weights on the off days. Well, some of the off days anyway. I like it because it is a solitary activity that I can go and do pretty much anytime I want. Started preparing for possibly doing some of the off-road-series races this year -- just for fun mind you -- by climbing a nearby hill that is about 700' (200m) high. It takes a very steady pace to climb that steep narrow pothole-filled road. Takes about a half-hour to go up and back so it's a pretty good workout. So I go and look to see what the race schedule is like. The first one happens to be a hill climb and goes up about 4000', almost six times as high. My ascent clocks in at about 20' for my little ride. That translates to about two hours assuming I could maintain that pace. Apparently the competative classes do it in about an hour. Sigh... i've got lots of work to do. Unfortunately, I can't make that particular race. Maybe next year, when I'm 40 and at the bottom of the next age division.

Hey, I like how you found a picture of me. The internet sure is amazing. So anyways, actually I was thinking of starting another type of workout and was going to ask your opinion of muay thai vs kenpo, which I did for a while as a kid. As far as what I'm looking for, I'm less interested in beating the crap out of people as I am just working on simple things like balance, coordination and timing -- all things that help me keep from busting my head open on rocks when I go riding. I should post some photos of the rides I go on, some nasty stuff. Generally it's miles from the nearest road too, so a misstep means pain at the very least and a serious life-threatening situation at the worst. So, um, yeah. Avoiding that would be at the top of my list. Kenpo, from what I remember, put the emphasis on the right things (IMHO), but maybe I just had a good instructor. Don't know much about muay thai except what wikipedia tells me and, of course, what I hear about it for you BK. So, what do you think? Oh, and congrats to your sweetheart for the magazine article. Very cool.

Don, it would depend for the most part, on the Gym and Instructor. I would pick Muay Thai over Kempo Karate. From watching my oldest son take Kempo the biggest differences are the minimal-contact aspect of Kempo. In Kempo it focuses mostly on Kata and learning predetermined moves. Stance and technique is totally different. If I were to use a Karate stance in Kickboxing I would be unceremoniously swept onto my butt. A Kempo stance is used to minimize the area your opponent can score. In Kickboxing your stance is square to your opponent, allowing quick movement in either direction. I have not witnessed Kempo using elbow or knee strikes either.
That aside, In Kickboxing, cardio is mandatory as without it you quickly become a punching bag. You need to be able to intelligently defend yourself and mount attacks or counter-attacks at all times. Balance is crucial; you need to be up on the ball of one foot to deliver kicks and knees. The whole secret to kickboxing is core rotation all the punches kicks knees and elbow strike's come from core rotation. Most kickboxers will use the left to right or right to left motion to put power into their technique. My best advice is to go take a Kempo class to re-acquaint your self with the type of workout it offers and then take a Kickboxing class to compare the two. By the next day when walking up stairs is painful you will see the benefits of a Muay Thai workout over Kempo. When I am finished working out the t-shirt I am wearing is completely soaked and my Thai shorts are as well. 98% of the people who take kickboxing never step into the ring. But they are assured that if anybody wants to get into a physical confrontation they had better be prepared for somebody that will take full advantage of all eight weapons at their disposal. I really feel confident that I could handle a much larger opponent using what I've learned over the last 7 years. I will always shy away from violence but if it is inevitable,...so be it. We'll sort out what their problem was later.
I think Kickboxing would give you the Cardio and balance that you are looking for before Kempo. Let me know if and when you attend a Kickboxing class so I can let you know if the type of workout they have is up to standards. Cause honestly, I don't think you would be able to complete a full beginners class without having to stop and catch your breath a few times. I've won money on bets with some of my freinds that thought they were in great shape.
