Wazee Music Awards

Concerning WMD bands and their "signed/unsigned" status:

I needed to comb through my downloads collection and determine which were my favorites from the WMD before I could do my nominations.  Mostly it's stuff from the WMD, so it wasn't too hard.  I'm pretty sure the are all from 2005 (or before), but call me on it if if something is more recent.

Now I need to figure out which of these bands are "unsigned".  Seems to me that a band would still qualify for this award if they have a self-produced or limited distribution CD and that only bands who've sold their souls, as it were (hehe), are disqualified.  Depending on where exactly you draw the line more or less bands from this list might make it.  Some obviously don't, like Bayside, Celldweller, and well, even KRIM's got a record deal -- just not one with an American company, but nobody said anything about that.  Well anyway my point is that just cause I don't see it in my local record store doesn't mean they're not a signed band.  

So, perhaps you all can help me.  Who from the following list is definitely qualified for Wammee 3: Most Promising Unsigned Band?

I really hope All Envy Aside is can be nominated -- they are leading my list right now.  Have they sold their souls yet, anyone know?

i don't know but i thought i read AVA are in the works for getting a deal but beyond that i don't know

I know those are "unsigned" at least in my opinion. I also know that bayside is signed with an independent label the same label as Hawthorne Heights actually.

Victory Records I believe and I want to say Silverstien is also signed with Victory.

come to think about it I want to say Spitalfield is also with Victory.  MTV2 has a lot of Victory Record commercials during the 1 hour a week they now play music videos.

So, a deal with Victory (even though we like them so much) still involves selling-one's-soulness right?

Ok.  I'm just kidding about that.  But a contract with Victory means you're "signed", right?

what we're trying to do with that category is reward the bands that are really just a couple of dudes playing in a garage together, putting their thing on wazee, and really going for it
the more obscure WMD-bands you might say

Oh, I understood that all right.  And I agree complete.

I was kind of hoping that more of these bands were not doing so well, so I could nominate them for a Wammee in this category.  Doh!  Did I say that out loud?  

Of course I'm happy that bands like AEA and many others I listed are doing so well!

You see, it's like this:  I listen and hear bands and often have no idea whether or not they are mainstream bands or not.  The main reason being that I don't listen to the radio much anymore.  

The second thing is that I was beginning to equate bands that put music in the WMD with bands that are not as well known or as successful.  Obviously, this is just plain wrong as I'm finding out.  This is not a bad thing though.  As has been discussed previously (bk) these freebees are a reflection of the band's understanding that it sells more CDs.  Wish even more bands were wise to this fact.

But I digress.  Looks like VIE is qualified.  I think Golden Vanity is too.  Zero State Reflex too.  Others anybody?  (remember we're talking "best unsigned band" category here).  I may have a hard time deciding this, as these three are each representative of a different kind of music.  

Bah, I'll decide something eventually, but this is harder than I expected.  When do nominations close again?

LAST WEEKWEEKEND FOR NOMINATIONS PEOPLE!

I sacrificed the first part of my afternoon for this in order to support the Cool Dutch Guys who put so much effort into this.  Note also that in my nominations I put a lot of links so people could easily check out my nominations for themselves.  Hopefully this will encourage people to agree with me and vote my way -- mwahahaha!

Sorry.  I think I need to get away from this computer for a while.  'mhuh' as someone would say...

Peoplezzz of Wazee
We've got 2 things to discuss


1. Some Wammee-categories have very little nominations. We're keeping those threads open for one more week, until we are ready to put the voting-polls up. Our plan is to CANCEL these Wammee-categories if they don't get more nominations this week. Ofcourse, we could also select some bands ourselves, but at some categories we just can't think of any. So, any solutions? Or do you agree we should cancel them when voting starts? A contest between just 2 bands isn't very exciting and probably won't give us a winner that deserves the award. We're talking about categories like 'Honory Mention' and 'Freeform Sunday'.


2. Some WMD bands are also nominated in the categories Best Song and Best Band. When we started this we seperated the WMD from the mainstream bands. When nominating began we accepted WMD to be nominated in the Best Song / Best Band categories if the WMD-band was really really your favorite. But we just realised WMD-bands will probably get an higher amount of votes in those categories, because they are likely to put some kind of 'VOTE FOR US ON WAZEE'-thing on their website / myspace etc. It isn't fair like that. Plus, they've already got the Best WMD-band/WMD-song categories to get nominated in. Do you all agree with this? This will mean bands like Bayside and Kontrust will be kicked out of the mainstream-categories. Both are nominated in WMD-categories also, so.... yeh =)
