If you need help, IM me.  I know enough to be extremely dangerous.  Hmm... I guess that's not much of a sales pitch, hehe.

Anyway, what's a HD monitor (high-def?).  Why would you need that to finish installing?

I need an hd monitor to finish the install in a GUI because the default resolution of the version of linux I am using defaults to a 720p resolution and my old tube tv can't display that resolution. So all i get is a blank screen unless i go into text mode.

Might want to try another distro, I've read a little about people's linux experience on the PS3 and if I recall FC 5 with some PS3 specific addons defaults to 480i. (See this article) Also, a word of caution: if you buy an HD panel for this purpose (TV or computer monitor) make sure it supports HDCP - rumor is the PS3 insists on encrypting its digital video output whenever it's running linux.

well i haven't planned to buy an hd screen for a little while still i just want it to play movies from my old downloads and stuff i have stored on my other computer... that's the primary reason i want it

for the time being though i am going to try to get YDL running since it is the "recommended" one... but if i have too many problems i will probably take that advice and get Fedora 5

that article is almost the same as the YDL install sheet which is cool but it has a bit more info for once the OS is installed so thanks mosey... if i had a karma giver thing i would give ya some

For M@W and anyone else interested in doing this:
Despite my advocating FC5 in my previous post, I installed YDL on a PS3 yesterday, cause that was the image I had already downloaded and I was too lazy to get another one :-)

I got around the problem M@W reported about not being able to complete the install on a TV by using a compatible digital HD monitor. With Yellow Dog installed, I found out that
  • There's clearly a lot of optimization for the Cell processor to be done - Firefox & OpenOffice both can take up to 15 seconds to load. Multitasking performance is dreadful at this time - hopefully the PS3-specific optimizations promised by the kernel developers in 2.6.20 will help this stuff out.
  • Regarding playing movies from your PC on your TV: The good news is YDL immediately recognizes and makes readily accessible USB mass storage devices ("thumb drives" & external hard drives) and it is also possible to access content from windows computers with filesharing enabled (if you're using the PS3 with wired ethernet, afaik no support for the PS3's wireless adapter in linux yet). The bad news is YDL does not come with mplayer, VLC, or any other video playback software that can play xvid-encoded content. Although I don't know, I have a feeling mplayer is included with FC5. With some linux experience and over an hour of work, I was able to install mplayer under YDL, at which time I found yet another limitation: as near as I can determine, the X windowing system is not on good enough terms with the PS3's graphics device to permit optimized video playback. As a result, mplayer refuses to resize the video being played back to the  monitor/TV.
  • A note on changing displays/resolutions: All my attempts to use the ps3videomode command to change video output settings have been unsuccessful. Although the signal output does change, I think X can't deal with the changes while its running, so the image output is unusable. Probably running the ps3videomode command in a text mode and then running startx would solve this problem.

Cool... thanks for posting that.  Esp. since I'm not going to spend the money on one right now for any number of reasons you and m@w brought to my attention (HD display + general usability under Linux).  Think I'll stick with my original plan to upgrade my 2+ yo system to a cheap dual-core AMD.  Our biggest use is still web surfing and e-mail for which we use Linux 100% of the time, but then there's me who wants to play games.  I buy old games usually, but even those have some pretty stiff cpu/memory requirements these days.  For gaming, a 2 year old system is near-prehistoric!

Anyway, thanks for the virtual tour of Linux on the PS3.  I'd give you karma, but...   Cool

I am glad you guys know linux so well... personally I have never played around with it at all and this is what is going to be my chance to customize it a bit and get more familiar... it also opens up a lot of job opportunities for me down the road if i actually get into the inner workings and familiarize myself...

I hate to have to drag this thread back ON topic, but i still cant log in to the rating option using my password.

However for anyone having a problem rating songs.  If you cant rate, do a forget your password? check on the forums, it should send you an email with a new password.

This password worked for me even though ive changed the password to something custom.

So it seems the rater doesnt take custom passwords very well, but might work with the random number/letter code it gives you.

I just gotta say how happy i am to be able to rate songs because this one:

It Overtakes Me by Flaming Lips

makes me ill.  I had to give it a '1'.   Lips sealed

So anyway, given that rating songs is an integral part of the user experience here, can I help anyone out who can't rate?  Usually I don't excercise my right to vote on a daily basis, so I'll tell you what -- I'll give away one a day to the first person that asks.  I don't want to do more than one a day, because it would skew the ratings too much.  But in light of the present situation, I feel action is necessary.

Any takers?  Post song and rating and it's a done deal (whether I agree with the rating or not -- we'll fix things up once the crisis has been resolved).

 Cool

An update, this isn't going to get fixed before my spring break, but I'm sure I'll have time to do it then. Also I'll have a present for those of you who've already taken the Vista plunge...
