Heh.  Yeah, I took the Vista plunge -- like a 300 ton freight train going off a cliff!

Tried to resize the partition to make room for "other" things and basically hosed it completely -- recovery disks from HP are on the way, sigh.  So if you want to do that... don't.  It hurts.  Apparently Vista has changed something in the underlying file system structure that breaks those repartitioning tools.  Sad

I lied.  I hadn't rated "Selfish Man", playing now.

I gave it a 1 minus.  Tongue

Are you logged in?  Sorry for asking the obvious, but that's the first thing I check when I can't rate songs.

I'm a new member and can't rate songs.  How long does it usually take?  I signed up to give some good feedback because there are some really good songs on here...

I wonder if anyone who registered after the web-site update is able to rate songs...  I remember there was a post about the login now covering two things: the forum and the rating system.  I think it's transparent to the user, but had to be done that way for some technical reason or the other.  Anyway, this suggests something is about half-broken.

Sorry I don't have the means to fix it (I'm just a listener too), but there is somebody out there who can...  Hopefully he'll see the post and be able to help.

Alternatively, this *is* publicly available forum software... if there was a bug in it, I could fix it (theoretically at least) and send the fix by e-mail (I love software!).  But the rating system is custom-written code that cooperates with the forum software and I'm not sure if the author would be willing to share it.  I suppose I could ask...  Mosey: if you see this, would this be a possibility???

I would of course be happy to provide all resources necessary to anyone with the time and technical know-how.

The problem is simply that the old rating code does not use the same suite of encryption algorithms as the new forum software, and as a result is unable to authenticate users that registered after the update occurred. The problem is compounded by the fact that, at least the last time I looked into it, there were a myriad of different hashing algorithms that SMF would compute your password against and compare with, because this is the only way to support sites that migrate from some other forum software and import their encrypted passwords into the SMF database, and the fact that cookies, which also need to be recognized and processed by the ratings system, use an entirely different (but still username/password-based, not session-based) means of authentication.

Anyone want to knock themselves out?

Yes.  Smiley

And I may not have the technical know-how at this time, but I'll figure it out as I go.  If you have a few minutes here and there to share information with me, that should be enough.  I really appreciate you taking the time to do this.

What comes to mind off the top of my head is whether the rating system code could be modified to piggyback off SMF's authentication, making it work the same for new and old users alike.  Just a thought, obviously backed by nothing but an enormous gap in Actual Knowledge.  I'll start learning about SMF and if you can help me get started with the ratings system code that would be great.  Thanks again.

Hate to be a post necro, but I registered on February 11 and I cannot vote. I don't remember if this forum emailed me a random number and letter passkey for me to change at my discretion, but should I just remake my account and use the key given?

Thanks. Smiley

Sorry, that won't help.  i'm looking into it, but admittedly haven't had much time to investigate yet.  there definitely is a problem (people can log in to the forums but can't rate songs) and it affects everyone who's registered after a certain date.

keep listening and keep posting.  it'll help motivate me.   Undecided
