I may have a solution but it requires getting a non profit organization setup then it is minimal to ascap and bmi because we don't profit from anything. Which would be the way I would assume Howard has it setup now. I will have to dig more into it though

Dyno

I am going to keep trying howard also

Dr Dyno - keep me posted on your possible new venture - I may be able to help support in other non money ways.... such as design, coding etc....

For the record, as I understand it the lion's share of the cash goes to Sound Exchange for rights to the sound recording, not ASCAP/BMI for rights to the musical composition. I spent a good hour on Sunday going through the actual legislation in the Federal Register etc and what I got out of it was "non-commercial" broadcasters are currently actually less empowered because they must pay the prevailing rates set by the CRB, whereas commercial operations that are in a position to be paying out over $25k a year in royalties are given a break. A very recent agreement between Sound Exchage and College Broadcasters, Inc (and several other groups) drops royalties to a fixed $500 a month with a cap on total music streamed, but this is still way more than I imagine we would be able to scare up, and probably there's no way we could become eligible anyway as we don't have a college affiliation.

Maybe I missed something, the laws are actually quite complicated, but I thought I'd share what I found.

Thanks Mosey for the information and your time to read through and summarise for us.  Assuming what you have written is the facts then it would be true to assume that wazee as it is will be no more and based on that info you provided I think that is fair enough unless someone is able to make a significant repeated donation every month.

It would be great however if Howard at east made a post or comment, the fact we have still got nothing from Howard suggests that maybe things are worse and he is in hiding, or worse something has happened to him directly (which I hope is not the case).

Anyway I think I have tried to convery my thoughts here as much as I can and also to get others to chat but it would seem there is little to no other interest which is a shame.  I will still pop in from time to time while the site is still live just to get an update (if any) but I will now draw back from my relentless forum posting Tongue

Cheers all

I hope Wazee isn't down for good. But if it is - thanks guys for everything!

I'll keep popping in too, just in case. It would be great to hear from Howard, even if it's just a goodbye.

I do have 10 MBit at home but that's only about 78 simultaneous listeners?

How can radio stations afford the bandwidth Smiley

OK that's whack...the server the stream originates at is now letting me log in again...maybe I'll try a little harder to start it up again as it appears Howard is not trying to prevent me from doing so...still I feel a little uncomfortable poking about someone else's box that I don'tn know what's going on with it...

Damn. The crappy wireless on the netbook I happened to be using when I gave the streaming server a try cut out, and now it won't let me reconnect again. When I logged in the machine was at the same spot stuck restarting, so it looks like my credentials work only while the machine is coming up. Guess we get to wait for a power outage or OS update or something. That really sucks.

Thanks for trying mosey.... I'm still dropping in from time to time as I said but will just wait and see what happens.  I would just like to know if anyone has heard anything at all from Howard, even a bugger off - just anything....

You should put your 1TB archive out as a torrent so someone else can stream next time it's down Wink
