The center of Boys Republic is 25 year old musical jack-of-all-trades Marijn Ophorst. Having been active for years as a singer, bassist and composer in various local bands (punk rock with Galm, electronic dance with Monomelodies, jazz and world music with jASMiNE, to name but a few) he now fronts his own group. The accompanying band is formed by changing musicians. On the first album, Kismet, we find (among others) session drummer Paul van Schaik (formerly Horn Of Plenty, recently with Kirsten) and Eurovision competer, studio owner and Veldhuis & Kemper bassist Jaco van der Steen. In his daily life Marijn, besides being a musician, works as a computer programmer, builds websites in his free time and continues to work on his first novel. He lives in Haarlem, The Netherlands with his three flatmates and a cat.
Kismet means fate, in the Greek sense of the word. Something that could not have been prevented, that goes as it must have gone. For better or worse. But it also implies, that all bad things may lead to something good. The twelve songs on Kismet tell of lov, loss and new love. From the bouncy sixties-pop of Judy, the power pop of Bring On The Sun and the jazz ballad I Creep To Your Room via the majestic The News and 42 to the straight-as-she-goes rock of The Fight and Girl Of My Dreams, the album contains a whole spectrum of musical influences, that however always manage to sound like Boys Republic.
