Deja Bru kicked off in 1998 when Brad Johnson, Shane Foote and Jon Ross started getting together and playing classic rock tunes at a house near Greybull, Wyoming called The Shack. Brad was playing acoustic guitar and singing, Shane was playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar and singing and Jon was playing bass guitar.
One night after a jam session, they went to a local bar for a few beers. Kurt Stephens happened to be at the same bar that night. Shane and Kurt were long-time friends and played in bands together for several years before. Introductions were made, beers were drunk and before the end of the night Kurt propositioned the group to add a drummer.
After a few months of rehearsing, they decided to take it on the road. The first official gig was a wedding reception for a friend of the band. Playing at local bars and an outdoor music festival in Ten Sleep, Wyoming, the band garnered praise from most people who listened. But, the itch of creativity needed to be scratched, and the band opted to do very few live shows and concentrate on writing and recording original material.
In 2001, after a lengthy hiatus, Jon decided he wanted to pursue music on his own terms and of his own style. Brad made a call to Chris Jordan and he joined the ranks. Chris, originally a drummer, decided he would give the bass guitar a go.
From 2002 to 2003, they wrote, produced, engineered, mixed and mastered the 12 tracks that became From the Basement. At the same time, they played limited outings for celebrations and music festivals. Band members were busy with families and work and there was not much time left for music.
In 2003, Deja Bru played a farewell (of sorts) show at Nowoodstock in Ten Sleep, Wyoming. Shane was leaving the band just as From the Basement was getting the finishing touches. There werent enough hours in the day for Shane to get everything needing done done, so they parted ways. The split was very amicable and the remaining members still consider Shane a band mate.
The winter of 2007 saw the band regroup with the line-up as it is now. Brad Johnson: Guitar and Lead Vocals. Chris Jordan: Bass Guitar and Vocals. Kurt Stephens is on sabbatical renovating his domicile.
Presently, they are working on writing and recording a new collection of songs for a CD for the enjoyment of friends and neighbors.
