Spitfire Charlie formed at the end of 2003 when singer John Roberts, guitarist John Rennie and bassist Ben Kreczak all met whilst studying Creative Music and Sound Technology and Leeds Metropolitan University. Drummer and Popular Music student Ben Handysides joined the band soon afterwards, and the lineup was complete. Though the band have been together for almost 3 years, it is only from the last 8 months of blood, sweat and hard work that the band have been gaining recognition amonst their peers, fans and reviewers. Their efforts were rewarded when they were played on Radio 1 by Steve Lamacq, and most recently were one of the 30 bands given the opportunity to play at Leeds Festival by playing in the Futuresound competition. This summer has seen the departure of drummer Ben, who has returned home to Hertfordshire after finishing his degree, he'll be sorely missed. Replacement drummer Chris Hide, yet another Creative Music student at Leeds Met, has settled in nicely, and the Spitfires fly on to fight another day....
